Tapping the furnace

Tapping the furnace

Bell metal, a mixture (not an alloy) of 77% copper and 23% tin, which is heated to about 1,100°C. When the metal is molten, more tin is added to compensate for that which burns off during the melting process, and the metal is run off into a ladle, or 'shank', ready to be poured into the waiting mould.
